Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a central nervous system depressant originally synthesized for use as an anesthetic. In later decades, it appeared in recreational settings because of its euphoric and sedative properties, though such use carries significant medical and legal risks.

When taken, GHB can slow brain activity and produce effects such as relaxation, mild euphoria, drowsiness, and lowered inhibitions. At higher or unpredictable concentrations, it may lead to confusion, unconsciousness, or respiratory depression, which is why it has been linked to cases of drug-facilitated assault.
